Our Future Circencester

The Market and Coastal Towns Initiative supports the development of vibrant, healthy and sustainable market and coastal towns across the south west. It is an innovative community based regeneration programme for market and coastal towns and their surrounding areas. It is led by and driven forward by communities themselves and requires all those involved to think and work differently.

At the heart of the Initiative is the preparation by local people of a long term community strategic plan covering the social, economic, environmental and cultural futures of their towns and surrounding rural area and the provision of support to enable such plans to be implemented.

In 2007, Cirencester Town Council announced that a partnership bid had been successful in securing funding and a Steering Group has since been established to represent the interests of those who live, work, visit or go to school/college in Cirencester and is working towards a deliverable vision for the future with Andrea Pellegram being recently appointed as Community Agent to lead on developing a Community Plan; due to be launched in the Autumn of 2008.

The Community Plan, called "Our Future Cirencester" sets out a number of community development projects that the Town Council, local volunteers and organisations will use as a blue-print for the future. The Plan will list many small projects, but put together, they will have a major impact on our quality of life in Cirencester. A small taster of projects that are being looked at is: more play facilities for children, town centre management, making the most of our local history, and creating more fun activities for residents and visitors. The work is building on Cotswold District Council's exercise last year, "Towards a Vision for Cirencester" and sits beside the forthcoming Cirencester Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document.

The consultation campaign was recently launched through the Wilts and Glos Standard and at the Churn Family Fun Day.

The emphasis is very much on working together, in partnership as a community, and it is hoped that through this initiative all will seize the moment to address the issues which need to be addressed and deliver that which needs to be delivered, now and in the future.
