Who re-built Spitalgate Wall? - A Mystery solved!!

Cirencester Town Council has arranged for the stone wall at Spitalgate to be repaired.

The boundary stone wall which, for a long time, has been a controversial discussion point, was left with no local authority having responsibility for its upkeep and repair when the developer for the nearby residential estate went into liquidation some 13 years ago.

The wall is visible from the A417 at Grove Lane on a main route into the town and its disrepair has been an eyesore for some time.

No local authority was prepared to take responsibility until the Town Council came to the rescue and on 8th September 2009, Councillors agreed that the wall should be repaired and that a condition survey be carried out prior to further consideration being given to whether or not the Town Council should register the wall within its ownership and undertake future responsibility for maintenance.

The wall was repaired in November, with a financial contribution from Gloucestershire County Council. We would accordingly like to take this opportunity to thank the County Council for agreeing to fund 50% of the works and look forward to continued partnership working.

Andrew Tubb, Cirencester Town Council, Chief Executive Officer, said: "As a Town Council, with Quality Status, we are delighted to announce a practical solution to a local issue and will continue in our efforts to take the lead for and on behalf of the people and place of Cirencester."

Budget 2010/11 - Your views count!

Cirencester Town Council has published its budget for 2010/11 and wants its local residents to comment on the proposals.

Please click here for the budget information or contact the Customer Information Point at Dyer House, 3 Dyer Street.

The precept of £668,485 equates to £96.09 for a Band 'D' equivalent property, which is an increase of under 6p per week.

It is important that the public has the opportunity to comment and engage with the decision-making process not just on the budget but on other projects that the Town Council leads on. Consulting the public in this way is a key part of our 'Community Engagement' policy.

Any comments received will be considered by the Town Council at its meeting on Tuesday, 12th January 2010; residents of the town who would like to speak at the meeting, as part of the Public Participation session, are asked to contact the Customer Information Point on 01285 655646 no later than 5.00 p.m. on the day before the meeting.

CCTV Monitoring gets results!

Following the publication of the CCTV figures earlier in the year (see Press Release of July 2009 detailed below), between April 2009 and July 2009 there were 103 logged incidents which were captured by the use of the Cirencester CCTV system. From these, there have been 16 arrests. Some of these would not have happened had it not been for the use of the system.

Watermoor Ward Vacancy - Election Result

On 16th July 2009, Gary Selwyn was elected as a Councillor for the Watermoor Ward of Cirencester Town Council following the resignation of Ms Karen Yarrow.

New Mayor/Deputy Mayor Elected

At the Council's Annual Meeting held on 12th May 2009, Councillor Geoffrey Adams was elected as Mayor of Cirencester and Councillor Andrew Lichnowski was elected as Deputy Mayor of Cirencester for the forthcoming year. Both Councillors Adams and Lichnowski look forward to representing the town for the benefit of the people and place of Cirencester.

2009/10 Budget

The website is one way in which the Town Council can ensure that the local community is kept informed about its services and expenditure and appreciates the need to demonstrate that an increase of about 60 pence per month for a Band 'D' property represents value for money.

One of the major increases in the budget for 2009/10 is for the Community Plan 'Our Future Cirencester'; in light of the economic downturn, the Town Council could have taken the view not to proceed with the Plan but believed that in the medium and long term this could be detrimental. The community, through its 50 plus volunteers, is saying we should maintain the momentum, continuing to build towards real and positive change for Cirencester.

Another way in which the Town Council helps to make a difference locally is through its grants programme, totalling £13,000, which includes £2,500 for ward specific projects. £10,500 was accordingly allocated on 14th April. If you would like an application form for the Ward Grant Fund for a local project, group or organization, please contact the Council's Customer Information Point in Dyer Street on 01285 655646 or in person, Monday to Friday 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Town Council puts the wow factor into play

Cirencester Town Council has re-opened the Abbey Grounds play area and has put the wow factor into play.

Children, young people and families can all enjoy this new experience. The 'Rio' Little City, the all inclusive 'Orbit' City Mover and the dynamic RidgeRider, an exhilarating moving seat on a curving track that gives the rider the excitement of a fairground ride - all for free!

With a traditional and modern mix Cirencester Town Council has put life back into play. The Town Council saved £75,000 over the past three years to put towards the scheme and consulted with the local community on the equipment and layout.

'This new facility is an asset for all children, young people and families who live in the town and visit Cirencester; and complements the beautiful surroundings of the Abbey Grounds.' said the Mayor, Councillor Mrs Shirley Alexander.

Andrew Tubb, Chief Executive Officer, added 'We hope that this facility will provide a fun opportunity to get active and enjoy play.'

An official opening will be held in the Spring of 2009.

Calling Walkers in Gloucestershire!

More than 100 Gloucestershire walks to download and print FREE!

There's no doubt about it, walking is good for you. It's good for your heart, it's good for your lungs, it's good for the muscle and bone growth of your children and it's good for your feeling of wellbeing! Strong scientific evidence now supports the many benefits to health of regular walking - it is recommended that we take at least 10,000 steps a day.

Studies show that walking can:

  • Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce high cholesterol
  • Reduce body fat
  • Enhance mental well being

Walking offers a great way to help kids get the active habit. If parents express excitement about the prospect of a walk in the countryside, they are more likely to transmit this feeling to their children. It's important to treat the walk as an exploration or adventure and to go at the child's pace, no matter how often they want to stop and look at things; take treats to eat and plenty to drink; and head for some landmark that will appeal to them such as a castle, a playground, an ice cream van or a boating pond. If children experience walking as part of a fun activity they are more likely to want to go again.

So, how do you find out what is on offer? John Harris, a keen walker, got fed up with the lack of information on walks that were going on in the County. So, he decided that if he couldn't find what he was looking for - he had better create it! So www.walkinginglos.co.uk came into being.

www.walkinginglos.co.uk gives you all the information you need for the best walking in the County:
Details of more than 100 walks to download and print free, details of all the Gloucestershire walking groups, maps and walk books - plus loads more information.
So check out the website and get walking!
