Watermoor Community Group | Cirencester Town Council

Watermoor Community Group

The Watermoor Community Group meets at 7pm at the Fire Station on the fourth Monday of every month (except April, August and December).  Come and join us if you are interested in making Watermoor an even better place to live. This is a great way to meet your local councillors over a cup of tea and discuss local news and issues with other residents who may well feel the same as you or have insights on how to make improvements from personal experience.

Not that we are just a talking shop; we want to be part of the action! Often you will find us out on a Saturday doing what we can - painting over graffiti, tidying up litter-strewn areas and organising events to help the community.

Our links with local service providers have strengthened over the years. This has been largely thanks to The Churn Project who helped set us up in the Spring of 2009 and is working with councils, service providers and the ward groups to form the Cirencester Neighbourhood Partnership. Through these links we have been able to invite representatives to talk to us about parking, speeding, dog fouling, fly-tipping, flooding, the Green Spaces Strategy and much more.

At our meetings you might find us discussing:
• Emergency planning. The CTC resilience group has engaged Gloucestershire Rural Community Council to help develop a common-sense plan to lessen the impact on residents in a crisis – especially those most vulnerable – and our local knowledge of facilities and needs is proving invaluable.
• Jubilee preparations. We hope to involve local residents in celebrations happening this June and are currently working through an idea to involve local children and leave a lasting memory of this historic event.
• Subway decoration. With the financial assistance of The Winstone Trust, Lions, CTC and others we have worked with Watermoor School, Churn Funday attendees and students at Cirencester College to put up mosaics in the subway from Fairfax Rd to Sperringate. Our next challenge is to decorate the wall opposite and we continue to rely on multi-talented local artist Debbie Sterling.
• Speed limits – We are keen to find out if reducing the speed limit on the ring road can make cutting the grass on the roundabouts easier and if enforcing the new 20mph zone in central Cirencester is practicable.
Or perhaps Tree-felling, City Bank development, or finding out more about local history is what interests you. If so please get in touch and we can put you in touch with the right person.

Finally, perhaps the best service we offer is regular communication of news and events through email round-ups. Find out what is happening on your doorstep whether you come to our meetings or not. To register an interest in receiving these then just contact the Chair, Nick Bridges at nickbridges37@yahoo.co.uk or phone him on 01285 650341. Or if your interest is primarily improving the environment then contact Vice-Chair Janet Hayes. She can be reached at janethayes1@hotmail.co.uk or by texting her mobile 07891124263.

Please get involved – we believe every contribution makes a difference.
