Cirencester Town Council

Queen's Diamond Jubilee 2012

See how Cirencester is celebrating the 60 years reign of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2012! For several months, a voluntary group of local people have been working hard to organise a programme of fun and interesting events and activities to make this a time to remember! They have even designed a special ‘Cirencester Sparkles’ logo!

To launch the celebrations, a tree planting was performed by the Earl and Countess Bathurst on 22 February 2012 in St Michael’s Park. The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lichnowski, the Chairman of the Jubilee Group, Councillor Mrs Shirley Alexander, members of the Lions Club (sponsors of the tree and plaque) as well as children from Watermoor and Cirencester Primary Schools.

The main focus of the celebrations will be on Monday 4 June when a large pedestrian procession will parade through the Market Place and into the Abbey Grounds where an afternoon of exciting activities will begin featuring a mini-pageant taking a look at Cirencester’s history, stalls, sideshows, bands, games, displays and workshops.

Bring a picnic or buy food in the park! Led by Cirencester Band, the procession will be headed by Cirencester’s specially selected Diamond Queen & Consort, Diamond Prince & Princess and will include bands and representatives of many local organisations. During the evening live bands will perform and as darkness sets in a torchlight procession comprising representatives of Cirencester’s five wards will enter the Abbey Grounds from different locations as a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ atmosphere brings the night to a close followed by a display of fireworks over the Abbey lake.

The weekend will feature open gardens in the Cirencester area, street parties, exhibitions, a 3.5 hour peal of bells culminating in a Jubilee Ball in the Bingham Hall on 5 June. In the run up to the weekend workshops and activities will be organised at New Brewery Arts and the Corinium Museum. Special bunting making workshops with prizes will also take place at the Cirencester Party Shop Loft. Two commemorative exhibitions will take place at the Bingham Gallery from 12 May – 22 September on Saturdays twice a month including the Jubilee weekend and at the Museum from 30 April – 5 June.
